CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE

CHECKING ON A FRIEND

Firstday. 3rd Day of Winter, 203rd Quinquennium of the Republic.

-

“Do you understand what we ask of you?” Savitie said.

“I think so, Sir,” I replied.

“Good,” he said, then he turned to Heli. “Sergeant, your file will act as my Contegio for the battle. We expect it to happen late into the night or early tomorrow, but that still doesn’t give us a lot of time. So get them to the armorer before we form up and fitted out for protection duties.”

This was a little unusual. Typically, the first file acted as Contegio for the Centurions. However, given the plan, it made sense.

Contegios were a type of security detail that would accompany a senior officer so that they could move about the battle as needed. Basically, it gives the commanding officer the ability to reinforce weak points in the lines or counter assassination attempts.

In the case of Legates, they usually had an entire century dedicated to the job.

“Yes Sir,” Heli replied and saluted.

Savitie was about to turn and head back into the Primus’ tent when something occurred to me.

“Sir?” I asked, not sure if I should bring this up or not.

“What is it, Jameson?”

I took a deep breath and let it out. The steam from it mixing with the cold outside air clouded the space between us. I didn’t know what the ramifications were going to be for all of this, but I might as well protect my friends who helped me as much as I could.

“It’s about how we helped Novitiate Castillo, Sir. We… well, we kind of convinced the medic to help us by getting us some Cress. I worry she might get in trouble when it’s completely my fault. I am more than happy to take any punish—”

“Stop,” Savitie commanded, his hand extending between us. “We will deal with all that if we survive the coming days. For now, I need you to focus on your task. But …” He pointed his finger first at me, then at Heli, and finally at Nat. “There will be an accounting of all this when that is done. Understand?”

“Yes, Sir!” the three of us all said at the same time. Only Elle remained silent with a small smirk on her face.

“If I could, I would use the same threat on you as well, Wayfarer,” Savitie commented when he glanced at her.

“I understand completely, Centurion.” She nodded her head as she spoke, but the smile remained.

Savitie just stared at her for a heartbeat before letting out a sigh and shaking his head. Then he pulled out a book of paper, which was common to the officers. Ripping out a small sheet and scribbling a note down on it before removing it and walking over to the nearby fire where he pulled out some wax and heated it over the coals.

“Take this,” he said, pressing the hot wax to the folded paper. “This will be authorization for the Cress upon my order.”

He took out his signet and pressed it to the wax.
